Why PB is one of the Best Cosmetology Schools

I recently had the chance to sit down with several of our students who are also parents. I wanted to find out from them a little bit about their experience that makes it uniquely different then those of our students who are not parents.

I first met with senior student Daira Guerra, who we have spoken with before, to get her side of things:

What made you decide to come to PB?
The fact that PB has 6 state board examiners on the staff was a huge part in why I choose to come here. I think their expertise is very important. Also, I liked the idea of having advanced continuing classes being made available while I am still a student. That way I am graduating with more then a student from another school who hasn't had that opportunity. To me that is what makes PB the best cosmetology school in the area.

How many children do you have?
I have 7 kids ranging from 2 -17.

As a mother how is it for you to manage your home, family and a full time school schedule?
Its hard but planning my day a head of time makes it much easier.  I have to prioritize my time to make room for all that needs to be done. I always make sure that I have time to study and do any homework I may have.

What made you come back to school ?
I had always wanted to go to cosmetology school. But once I started having kids it got put on the back burner. I finally got to a place where I felt like it was manageable for me to go back to do it.

How has it been for you getting back to into the classroom environment? It was hard and overwhelming at first coming back to school at 36. I questioned my decision in the beginning because of how so many of the students are so young,  many right out of high school. The school work itself was very easy for me I enjoy learning and was eager to gain more information.

You said you questioned your decision in the beginning, when did you realize you made the right choice? When I cut my daughters hair, she's 13, and she loved it. She went on to brag to her friends about how her mom cut her hair.

If I asked you to create a highlight reel of your time at PB what are some of the moments that would be in there? My first client was a big moment for me I was nervous but got through it and she loved it! Having fun with all my friends that I have made , doing the "Look of Hollywood Show" and the "Halloween Show" and my junior teacher Ms. Jill, she taught me a lot and we always had fun in class.

What advice do you have for Moms and Dads who are thinking about coming to PB?
It's manageable, I can't say that it's going to be easy but if you set goals for yourself and keep an organized calendar it will not be as hard. Staying focused on the end result gets you through because it is so rewarding at the end of the day to be doing something you love. Choose the best cosmetology school that works for you and for me that was PB.

After meeting with Daira I met with two time graduate of our school Sstefanie Velez-Gentry and heres what she had to say about making it all work!

What made you decide to come to PB?

I had come to PB when I was 19 to get my Manicurist License and decided at 32 to come back for my Cosmetology License. I love that PB has a family atmosphere; it’s a tight nit group where everyone knows one another. I also love that they offer so much continuing education it makes it so fun being able to do different things while still in the program. That makes them the best cosmetology school in the area.

How many children do you have?

I have 2 daughters, they’re 6 and 8.

As a mother how is it for you to manage your home, family and a full time school schedule?

It’s kind of crazy, to me though, it’s like a full time job going to school. I feel like I am just like every other  working mom. With my girls being in school it makes it a little easier because I am not missing out on being home with them and I do not need to worry about childcare.

What made you come back to school ?

My kids being in school full time gave me the perfect opportunity to come back to school. I always had a passion for all things girly and trendy with hair being a huge focus. Being a manicurist just wasn’t enough anymore I wanted to be the total package so coming back for cosmetology was the missing piece to the puzzle.

How has it been for you getting back to into the classroom environment?

At first I really struggled, I was diagnosed midway through the program with ADD, I feel like now that I can manage that I can focus on what is important in the classroom. I enjoy being with the younger students because they give me a fresh perspective on things and excitement about the new trends. I love learning so I enjoy that everyday it’s something fun and different. I think the variety of educators has been helpful as well, in the salon I have been able to work with different teachers and get different ways of doing things it has really helped me to stay focused on bettering my skill.

If I asked you to create a highlight reel of your time at PB what are some of the moments that would be in there?

The opening of the new salon at PB was so exciting for all of us and it is so beautiful we couldn’t wait to work up there! I earned the highest grossing sales for a student, I did $1600 in the month of May, the teachers, laughing with them and having fun while learning, going to the International Beauty Show with my friends from class and just the everyday family experience at PB.

What advice do you have for Moms and Dads who are thinking about coming to PB?

Just do it. Do not second guess, do not wait any longer. If there is a will there is a way. A passion will be with you forever, nagging at you until you satisfy it so even if you have to go part time it’s a step in the right direction to fulfilling your dream.
