Art Museum Trip

We are so excited that on June 11, we will be heading to the Philadelphia Art Museum to check out the new exhibit-  Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love.


Patrick Kelly's was an American Designer who reached the height of his career during the late 80's.
His fashions encompassed bold colors and eye catching geometric shapes. Kelly's unique style and eye for body hugging ensembles got him recognized early on in his career and helped propel him to the top of the fashion industry from New York to Paris.

The exhibit will have an expansive collection on display that will showcase his signature styles. The pieces in collection were  presented to the Museum as a promised gift by Kelly’s business and life partner, Bjorn Guil Amelan, and Bill T. Jones

We are looking forward to visiting the exhibit which is running from April 27th- November 30th. Our students will be sure to find inspiration for complimenting hairstyles to the collection!!

Ask a Client

We are very excited to have guest blogger, Steph, from Life According to Steph. She blogs on everything from recent recipes to daily life. We asked to her tell us what she thinks makes a great stylist. Standing behind the chair sometimes we focus so heavily on the hair itself. We often can lose sight of the personal connection with the person it's attached to. Its so important to remember that often times our clients look forward to seeing us all day, for the relaxation, retreat and social nature of our appointments.

Here's the scoop "according to Steph"-
Everyone loves walking out of the hair salon looking and feeling like a million bucks with fresh new hair, but most people are also busy, and let's face it - getting your hair done is a major time suck. You could be accomplishing a lot of other things during during your time in that chair, which is why having a fabulous stylist is so important.

What makes a stylist great from a customer's point of view is not just technical skills. Aside from being knowledgeable with cut and color skills, my main requirements in a stylist are that they're able to communicate with me on my level and that they're personable.

By communicating with me on my level, I mean really getting what I'm asking for when I say red. To me, red is the color I have in my mind. To a stylist, red means a million different shades. It's about figuring out what I really want and being able to talk to me in layman's terms about what's going on with my hair. But like I said, technical skills are not the end all, be all of a great stylist.
 photo d_zps222e94e7.jpg Since hair is a people business, you'd think all stylists would be personable, right? However, I've sat in front of stylists that just haven't been personable or even friendly. Sure, my hair turned out fine, but I ended up switching to a different stylist after a few appointments because I simply didn't care to share 1.5-2 hours of my time with that stylist.We didn't click and clicking is an important part of the stylist - client dynamic.

If you're not personable, I'm not sticking around to sit in your chair. My current stylist - and the one I've been with for eight years - fits my bill: she's a superb stylist technically in regards to cut, color, and highlights. She explains colors and techniques she's going to use in ways that I understand. And we get along really well and always have a lot of laughs. Her personality is great and I always get up from the chair smiling, loving my new hair, and feeling like time flew by because of my stylist.

Personable stylists reap the benefits of clicking with clients - they get long-standing customers who are loyal and will stick with them and also fill their book by referring them out. Personality is important!

Why I love the Beauty BIZ

                                                   Why I Love Being in the Beauty 'BIZ'
 
 
When we are children we have dreams of what we will be when we grow up. Our dreams usually begin with becoming a movie star, Wonder Woman, Superman or Malibu Barbie. As we begin to grow up, sometimes our dreams change, sometimes because we have changed, sometimes because the world has told us we need to change our dreams. If your dream has always been to be a barber/stylist,esthetician or nail tech, I am here to tell you that you don't have to change your dreams.
 
What I have come to realize after over 30 years in my beloved industry (10 of it as a hair journalist) is that many people, ladies and gents alike need to be educated, not only about their hair and what products they should use, but about our industry as well. There is more to a hair appointment than hair being cut and manicures being done while everyone drinks coffee and talks about the newest
celebrity couple.
 
The Hair Biz (as I like to call it) is a billion dollar business, year after year. It is an industry that guarantee's an income - if you do the work. It is an industry that is always changing and evolving and improving. There is always something new to learn, be it a new formulation, a new cutting technique or a better way to retain your clientele. The companies that support the industry offer free
product knowledge classes, free cutting classes, free hair color classes.
 
It is an industry that embraces the up and comers and celebrates the achievements of salons, stylists, makeup artists, estheticians and barbers alike. It is an industry where professional education is a way of life. On a daily basis as professionals we deal with the science of hair and the chemistry of hair color and perms, how to manage clientele, the budget, time, retail inventory, all the while looking fabulous without a hair out
of place. As a stylist, you should always be proud of what you do and always remember how much you have learned, retained and applied. Beauty and brains is a killer combo.
 
Being a hair professional, as Tabatha Coffey has put it, is more than just about hair. It is about making personal connections with your clients. Helping them through life's trials and celebrating life's achievements. It's about helping the ladies and gents who sit in your chair find their beauty, inside and out. It's an industry that helps you grow as person, as an artist and with some blood, sweat
and tears - a thriving business professional.
 
If you have a passion for what you do, as I do, it won't feel like work. Don't get me wrong, some days your feet will hurt, some days will be more trying than others - i.e.; color correction thanks to box dye and a bad break up, but at the end of the day, when you are living your dream and following your passion, it won't feel like work.
The beauty profession is one of the only industries I know that at the end of the day you have made someone look and feel like a movie star, made a woman feel as beautiful as she thought her Malibu Barbie was and you yourself feel like Wonder Woman or Superman. I don't know about you, but I think that is pretty awesome. Come and join us.
